Professional Certification

You can earn the Certified Professional Secretary (CPS) rating or Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) rating through IAAP.  The CPS exam is a one-day exam, with three parts.  The CAP exam is a one and one-half day exam, with four parts.  Both certifications can be attained by first becoming a CPS then adding the CAP at a later date.  The exams are administered each May and November.  Although achieving certification is recommended, it is not a requirement for IAAP membership.

Why Certification?

Certification through IAAP is the internationally recognized standard of excellence.  Achieving certification through IAAP can be a tremendous career advantage, providing convincing distinction in an increasingly competitive job market.  Professional certification shows employers, clients and associates that you are committed as a professional.  Certification is a mark of excellence that you carry with you everywhere you go!

Certification will enhance your career success through:

  • Job Advancement
  • Professional Skills
  • Salary
  • Esteem
  • College Credit
  • Certification Seminars

Who is Eligible?

To attain the CPS rating, a candidate must meet certain educational and work experience requirements.  To achieve both ratings, a candidate must first apply as a CPS candidate, meet all regulations for that rating, and pass all three parts of that exam.  Then, as a CPS holder, that individual may then apply to take only Part 4 of the CAP exam and achieve that rating.

Certification Seminar

IAAP holds an annual seminar offering advanced professional education.  Every CPS and CAP recipient and examination registrant is invited to attend.  The Certification Seminar
provides top-notch education for CPS and CAP holders and approved candidates.  The seminar is an additional benefit of certification.

Recertification

CPS and CAP holders are required to recertify every five years, assuring that you remain abreast of new technologies, techniques and issues in the profession.  Failure to comply with mandatory recertification requirements will require individuals to reapply and retest to regain active certification.
